What Is Metal Bending?

Metal bending is the process by which metal is deformed using die-sets. When sheet metal is bent, the outer surface of the metal is stretched and the inner compressed, to bring about just the right stretch. Thus, handling metal bending means working correctly with equations like bend allowance and bend or bend deduction to get just the right thing. Bending does not increase or decrease the surface area of the metal, it only changes the shape. Bending is done using die sets or metal brakes. The sheet metal to be bent is placed on a die and held in place using clamps or gauges.
