Definition and Types of Metal O-Rings

Metal O-rings are metallic variants of elastomeric O-rings. These rings are used in applications that cannot be catered by elastomeric O-rings. The metallic elasticity of the metal O-rings creates the sealing effect. These O-rings are vulnerable to rusting and are generally coated with a material softer than the base metal. Metal O-rings are primarily classified into solid metal O-rings and hollow metal O-rings based on their structural attribute. Solid metal O-rings are used in the nuclear industry because they are less vulnerable to radiation. Hollow metal O-rings are further classified into plain hollow O-rings, self-energized hollow O-rings, and pressure filled O-rings based on the characteristics of the hollow segment of the O-rings. Metal O-rings are largely unsuitable for dynamic sealing applications and cannot be reused after the first sealing.
